Speak Now with Gary Marlin

Comedy/Drama

Lana is a small-time journalist languishing in obscurity. Eager to find a story that will earn her work the accolades she thinks it deserves, she latches onto the story of Gary Marlin. Gary, a middle-aged taxman and devout Christian, describes himself as a wedding intervention speaker - someone who offers wedding guests a rare opportunity.

Gary takes the testimony of these guests, shows up at the wedding in question, and at the moment where the priest asks for any with objections to speak now or forever hold their peace, he strikes. Gary stands and anonymously presents the case as to why the betrothed couple should not tie the knot, the words of the wedding guest through the mouth of a stranger.

As the two tour America, can Lana reconcile her own lacklustre relationship, while getting the story she thinks she needs? Or will Gary’s fundamentalist perspective triumph in the end?

Speak Now with Gary Marlin is an oddball comedy with ever growing shades of introspection. As the story transpires over the course of an All-American road trip set in 2002, the cross-section of romance and marriage it shows is at once strange, and also heart wrenching, in that way only the strangest parts of life can be.  The story follows themes of letting go and breaking apart, as Gary Marlin leaves a trail of shattered marriages in his wake.
